Extra Large Ironing Board Cover in the UK - How to Measure Correctly

Ironing is a household task that is a chore to some, but is therapeutic to others. Whatever your feelings on the matter, ironing is difficult to avoid completely - similar to washing up dishes.

Perhaps the most important element to making ironing more effective and maybe even more enjoyable, is to make sure your ironing board is fitted with the correct size of ironing board cover which is in good condition. It isn't often realised, but there's no such thing as a standard ironing board size - they vary significantly in dimensions.

You may consider you have an extra large ironing board, but in other households your ironing board would be looked upon as being medium. Regardless of board size, however, to get pristine ironing results it is important that your ironing board cover fits neatly with no lumps or creases and that it provides you with an even flat surface.

When it comes to replacing your ironing board cover, it is essential you acquire a cover of the correct size.

Whether your need is for a medium, large or extra large ironing board cover, there is a  formula which will ensure that you acquire the right size of cover for your ironing board.

The first step is to measure carefully the length of your ironing board at the longest point - along the actual ironing board surface. Then carefully measure the widest point of the width of the ironing board - across the actual ironing board surface. You now have the ironing board surface length and width measurements.

Next you need to allow for the cover to be drawn underneath the ironing board.

So, now measure the depth of the ironing board. That is the depth of the side of the ironing board surface - usually only a few centimetres. You take this depth measurement and multiply it by two. You then add that doubled depth figure to both your length measurement and your width measurement.

This newly calculated length and depth measurements are the minimum size of extra large ironing board cover that you need for your ironing board.

One final tip is to place felt underlay underneath your ironing board cover. This underlay felt is normally supplied in one large piece which you can cut to the desired size. The benefit of using underlay is that it absorbs heat and helps to give a better finish to when ironing garments.
