Laughing Gas for Your Car
Laughing gas or happy gas is the popular name given to the Nitrous Oxide gas. This is the effect it has on people who inhale it. It sedates them leaving them dreamy and out of it and this will be characterized by hysterical giggles. The Nitrous Oxide gas has N2O as its chemical formula and it is characterized by an odor and taste that is a bit sweet. It is non flammable and colorless when at room temperature. The Second World War gave birth to its use and it was used with aircrafts to enhance their systems. It made the war planes accelerate over the enemy territories in an effort to increase their attack chances. It also kept the planes running for longer. This was applied in low oxygen atmospheres especially in high altitudes.
Nitrous Oxide Systems (NOS) are widely used due to their affordability, their ease of installation and their simple design. They boost a vehicles horsepower instantly and this makes them popular. They are presently used in the motor vehicle industry for race cars as they have the power to enhance an engine’s performance. They act as oxidizers when subjected to high temperatures. They allow for super performances by adding power to the engine. The first racing cars to use the Nitrous Oxide Systems technology were the NASCAR cars in 1970s. Their use later spread to underground cars which were later banned.
Nitrous Oxide enhances performance in vehicles by supporting the combustion process. This boosts the engine power. For combustion to take place, oxygen has to be present. Fuel in the same way requires oxygen to burn and it is by burning that it heats up to produce energy that will in turn run the engine. Pure oxygen is too strong to be introduced to an engine on its own as it risks explosions. This is because it is supercharged and this can cause the engine to explode. That is why it is mixed with fuel and introduced to the engine as a cocktail and this runs a car at normal speeds. To achieve super speeds, Nitrogen Oxide is added into the cocktail and the result is the formation of two gases; Oxygen and Nitrogen. This Oxygen is in its pure state and this powers the car highly sending it racing at very high speeds.
Nitrogen is the residue left after the formation of pure Oxygen. It is an inert gas and this does not allow for any reaction with any atom. Its purpose is to control the heat produced by the pure Oxygen. It produces a cooling effect that lowers the heat. The Nitrous Oxide Systems that are commonly used include Nitrous Oxide Wet Injections and Nitrous Oxide Dry injections. The Dry Injection uses Nitrous Oxide only. It is used to dry off the fuel and the result is a less powered engine. The Wet Injection is a cocktail of Nitrous Oxide and fuel and this results into a high powered engine. One limitation of Nitrous Oxide Systems (NOS) is that the engine is stressed due to the cylinder pressure which is now increased. This in turn destroys the crankshafts and pistons.

Race of the Century $11.99 On the morning of February 12, 1908, six cars from four different countries lined up in the swirling snow of Times Square, surrounded by a frenzied crowd of 250,000. The seventeen men who started the New York to Paris auto race were an international roster of personalities: a charismatic Norwegian outdoorsman, a witty French count, a pair of Italian sophisticates, an aristocratic German army officer, and a cranky mechanic from Buffalo, New York. President Theodore Roosevelt congratulated them by saying, “I like people who do something, not the good safe man who stays at home.” These men were doing something no man had ever done before, and their journey would take them very far from home. Their course was calculated at more than 21,000 miles, across three continents and six countries. It would cross over mountain ranges—some as high as 10,000 feet—and through Arctic freeze and desert heat, from drifting snow to blowing sand. Bridgeless rivers and seas of mud blocked the way, while wolves, bears, and bandits stalked vast, lonely expanses of the route. And there were no gas stations, no garages, and no replacement parts available. The automobile, after all, had been sold commercially for only fifteen years. Many people along the route had never even seen one. Among the heroes of the race were two men who ultimately transcended the others in tenacity, skill, and leadership. Ober-lieutenant Hans Koeppen, a rising officer in the Prussian army, led the German team in their canvas-topped 40-horsepower Protos. His amiable personality belied a core of sheer determination, and by the race’s end, he had won the respect of even his toughest critics. His counterpart on the U.S. team was George Schuster, a blue-collar mechanic and son of German immigrants, who led the Americans in their lightweight 60-horsepower Thomas Flyer. A born competitor, Schuster joined the U.S. team as an undistinguished workman, but he would battle Koeppen until the very end. Ultimately the German and the American would be left alone in the race, fighting the elements, exhaustion, and each other until the winning car’s glorious entrance into Paris, on July 30, 1908. Lincoln’s Birthday, February 12, 1908 . . . The crowds gathering on Broadway all morning were not out to honor Abe Lincoln, either. They were on the avenue to catch sight of the start of the New York-to-Paris Automobile Race. There would only be one—one race round the world, one start, and one particular way that, for the people who lived through it, the world would never be the same. The automobile was about to take it all on: not just Broadway, but the farthest reaches to which it could lead. On that absurdity, the auto was about to come of age. “By ten o’clock,” reported the Tribune , “Broadway up to the northernmost reaches of Harlem looked as though everybody was expecting the circus to come to town.” The excitement was gener |

Seeing through Race $27.5 Seeing through Race is a boldly original reinterpretation of the iconic photographs of the black civil rights struggle. Martin A. Berger's provocative and groundbreaking study shows how the very pictures credited with arousing white sympathy, and thereby paving the way for civil rights legislation, actually limited the scope of racial reform in the 1960s. Berger analyzes many of these famous imagesdogs and fire hoses turned against peaceful black marchers in Birmingham, tear gas and clubs wielded against voting-rights marchers in Selmaand argues that because white sympathy was dependent on photographs of powerless blacks, these unforgettable pictures undermined efforts to enactor even imaginereforms that threatened to upend the racial balance of power. |
