Pull-ups: Yes You Can
So you think you can't do a pull-up? Too hard? You're a woman and its only for men? You're a man and pulling up your own body weight is too hard? To that I say "Excuses, every one of them!".
The pull-up is one of the best bodyweight exercises out there. It targets your back muscles and gives your biceps a good hit too. It is well worth the work to train your body to be able to manage pull-ups.
There are many grips and hand widths that you can use to do pull-ups. Each of these target the muscles in your back differently. Some are easier and some are harder to accomplish. Start with the easier versions and once you're able to do several reps you can move on to the more difficult grips.
So, you say you can't even do one? Okay, start with a narrow grip with your palms facing towards your face. At least in my opinion, that is the easiest grip, and more commonly referred to as a chin-up. If you can't do one, then don't start from a full hang. Start from a stand with your elbows slightly bent. Or if that's still too hard, start with your arms bent at a 90 degree angle and just work on getting your eyes even with the bar. Just do one. Then walk away. Come back later and do another one. When I was first starting out I'd do one per hour for three hours (assuming you have somewhere around your home you can do this). If you're limited to your gym visit, do one at the beginning of your workout and another one at the end. Then one at the beginning, one in the middle and one at the end.
You can also try experimenting with raising yourself up with a chair then only working the negative, by slowly lowering yourself (without the chair assisting).
Once you are able to do a few from that position, start lower with your arms a bit straighter, try to get your chin even with the bar at the top of the move. Keep going like this until you can start from a full hang and do several reps.
And trust me, it will come. With hard work and persistence, it WILL come.
At this stage you should start experimenting with different and wider grips. This is where it gets really fun, testing out what you are now capable of. Before long you'll be the envy of many when you can walk up to the bar and just rip off a set and make it look effortless.

Pull $19.99 The first clear guide to the Semantic Web and its upcoming impact on the business world Imagine that, in 1992, someone handed you a book about the future of something called the World Wide Web. This book claimed that through a piece of software called a "browser", which accesses "web sites", the world economy and our daily lives would change forever. Would you have believed even 10 percent of that book? Did you take advantage of the first Internet wave and get ahead of the curve? Pull is the blueprint to the next disruptive wave. Some call it Web 3.0; others call it the semantic web. It's a fundamental transition from pushing information to pulling, using a new way of thinking and collaborating online. Using the principles of this book, you will slash 5-20 percent off your bottom line, make your customers happier, accelerate your industry, and prepare your company for the twenty-first century. It isn't going to be easy, and you don't have any choice. By 2015, your company will be more agile and your processes more flexible than you ever thought possible. The semantic web leads to possibilities straight from science fiction, such as buildings that can order their own supplies, eliminating the IRS, and lawyers finally making sense. But it also leads to major changes in every field, from shipping and retail distribution to health care and financial reporting. Through clear examples, case studies, principles, and scenarios, business strategist David Siegel takes you on a tour of this new world. You'll learn: -Which industries are already ahead. -Which industries are already dead. -How to make the power shift from pushing to pulling information. -How software, hardware, media, and marketing will all change. -How to plan your own strategy for embracing the semantic web. We are at the beginning of a new technology curve that will affect all areas of business. Right now, you have a choice. You can decide to start preparing for the exciting opportunities that lay ahead or you can leave this book on the shelf and get left in the dust like last time. |
