Are Electric Scooters Right for Your Kid's?

For some considerable time my seven year old son pleaded with me to buy him an electric scooter. Quite a few of his friends had them and so that's always an enticement for a young one. So, I did a fair bit of research around the moms and dads at our local play area and was told that the was amongst the better ones for his age group and value for money.

They do about 10 to 12 miles per hour which I consider fast enough for a seven year old - this is about adult running speed, not jogging speed. Battery life seems all over the place. The factory says about forty minutes, but we seem to get an easy hour and a half running out of our one and one of the kids in the neighbourhood even got three hours. I guess it depends on the terrain and surface that the scooters are running on and of course the weight. These are recommended up to 125 pounds, so, I guess that includes riders up to twelve or so as well. I've got to say here though that by the time your kid is twelve the E100 will not be for them, as it will be too slow - they'll be best off with something like the E300 which should be good for about 25 miles per hour.

Some advise I got from one of the mom's was to make sure it arrives a few days at least before his birthday as you will need 12 hours to fully charge the battery. (we got a spare battery as well, so he could get a full afternoon out of the scooter). Although she got her's before her daughters birthday, she didn't think about the battery at all and of course had one disappointed daughter on her hands when she couldn't ride it until the next day.

The scooter comes in a pre assembled box for packaging reasons. Instructions were fairly straight forward and it gave my son a lot of fun to help assemble. This took only about 15 minutes and we were all ready to see how it went. With this model you've got to give it a small pedal to about walking pace before the motor kicks in. Larger models will all take off from a stand still but they have of course got more powerful motors.

So, once he gave it a small kick start down the pavement away he went and he was thrilled with it. He still is, he's had it for about three months now and still plays on it straight after school - in fact now four of his friends have them too and they all get together on them. We're fairly pleased about this because it takes them away from that dreaded computer.

We haven't had any serious problems in this time at all. We've found that when he turns a hard right hander that the chain guard may rub on the ground but he's only lost a few scrapings of paint thru this.

We got all the accessories with it including a helmet and as I said a highly recommended second battery.

Anyway, if you're in the market for something like this I guarantee your son or daughter, or, both, will have a ton of fun on it.
