In a time when it seems as if prices are rising exponentially overnight, how far will people go to save a few bucks?  I think we have all seen a new rise in more efficient, money saving alternatives many of which tend to be “green” alternatives.  Less people are dining out, many people are cutting out trips to the beach, and I find myself paying bills online rather than driving to the post office.  Americans as a whole are cutting corners to speak in all areas from vacations to driving.  With gas prices seeming to change more often than I can keep track of, what are we to do? 

On the way out the door tonight, my father was commenting on how the gas prices at the station up the street had gone up a few cents since the night prior.  As we rounded the corner on our drive to dinner, we couldn’t help but notice that it had gone up two more cents since the morning!  I have seen quite a few people resorting to bicycles, and quite honestly, as a full time student and full time worker, I just don’t think getting up an hour earlier to bicycle to work would last very long!  But, I have investigated another idea…There has seemed to be an influx of scooters in my area.  I just noticed a new dealer pop up last week.  Are we so desperate that we are going to ride scooters in which we would have to bare ourselves to Mother Nature and worse yet, all the other crazy drivers on the road just to save a few bucks?  Well, I guess that just depends on how much we would save-its all about the money, right?!

Lets take a look at the example of the scooter.  You can buy a brand new scooter anywhere from approximately $1,999.00 well into the $8,000.00 range.  That’s a lot less than I paid for my Saturn Vue!  The smaller models are 49 cc’s and run at a maximum speed of 35MPH.  In a city or small town environment, this may work out just fine.  I think I will pay for the comfort of having a SUV when I have to take the highway from my small town into the “City of Brotherly Love”, but on the other hand, if I had a Scooter, I could always get involved in a “carshare”, right?? 

Now, I generally fill my tank once a week which runs me (depending on gas prices!!)  fifty dollars.  I don’t drive very far.  School and work are within five miles in either direction.  An average scooter that drives forty miles a day (probably about double what I drive a day) will cost about $12.14 a week in gas.  Again, because I drive only half of that, for my situation, that would be $6.07 a week. 

Here is something else to consider…because some of these models are so small, they do not require you to have a motorcycle license, insurance, or registration.  My insurance alone is in the upwards of $800.00 a year.  To summarize, I could buy a scooter in four months worth of car payments.  Instead of paying approximately $2,600.00 a year for gas, if I owned a scooter, my gas expenditure would total $315.64 per year!  That is a difference of $2,284.36.  I paid roughly $22,000.00 for my Saturn Vue.  That would be close to a $20,000.00 difference.  Plus the savings of $800.00 a year on insurance and lets forget about emissions and inspections.  Already I look at saving myself (if I choose to pay off my car in one year as I would pay cash for the scooter) over $21,000.00 this year!  In times like these, more and more people are on two wheels, and I think the public has become more aware and more friendly towards these means of transportation, especially in cities.  Although some only top out at 35MPH, you gain your advantage through being able to ride between the cars at a light and move forward  And, parking has become a bit less of a problem.  Just the other day I was laughing with a friend over dinner about buying one.  He wasn’t sure where to keep it as parking has become more and more of a problem for car owners in the college town that we live in.  I suggested (as a joke) in his apartment!  He laughed, and moments later we both stopped and thought about it.  Why not?  No need to pay for a parking permit, no need to search for a spot.  Although, they tend to fit right in between cars that are parallel parked on the street, you could feasibly park your scooter in your house or on your back porch…why not?  Its all about saving a few bucks, right?!

So, the question at hand is, “Is my life worth $21,000.00 in savings?”  Well, for myself, a scooter would NEVER make it up my driveway in the winter, and I’m not so sure I would personally chose to own a scooter as my main means of transportation.  But lets face it, I could probably pay off school if I bought a smaller, less expensive car, and had a scooter for good weather days!  So, as of right now, I will not be entering the scooter showroom anytime soon, but for many people, it may be a great option, especially if you live in a city and don’t have a far commute.  I would definitely buy one if I lived in our local city, Philadelphia.  Seems like I see many more subway beatings in Philadelphia on the local news than I do scooter accidents!!!
