Winter is still holding us in its icy grip, so a skiing holiday may be just what you need! Sextant French Properties suggests a variety of Winter sports resorts stays at bargain prices in the Rhone Alps region (French Alps); where skiing is a major activity from October to April.

Number 1:
Les gets a ski resort in the Haute-Savoie department. The winter season in Les Gets runs from mid-December to mid-April although the area is popular year-round with a wide range of activities on offer over the spring/summer months. Les Gets is predominantly a family resort. The nearest international airport is Geneva which is approximately 90 minutes away by car (34 miles). Geneva airport is serviced by a number of low-cost airlines such as Easy Jet and Fly2. Over the summer, activities include:

Number 2:
Alpe d'Huez one of the world's largest skiing resorts with its 150 miles of pistes and 84 ski lifts. Situated between 1,150 and over 2,000 metres of altitude, Alpe d'Huez owes part of its fame to the 21 bends in the road leading up to the resort, which provide the setting for the most challenging stage in the Tour de France every couple of years. It is located a few miles from Grenoble in the Isere department. You can easily access Grenoble via low-cost airlines such as Ryanair and Easy Jet.

Number 3:
Les Arcs a huge ski area belonging to the Paradiski ski domain that has one of the largest black runs in Europe and impressive architecture. Ideal for both beginners and expert skiers, there are 5 villages in the area: Arc 1600, Arc 1800, Arc 1950 and Bourg Sainte-Maurice, which are open all year round so that when the ski slopes close for the summer the fun does not stop.

Number 4:
Together with Val d'Isere, the two make up the "Espace Killy" skiing area. The resort is brimming with outdoor and indoor activities including:
- Cross-Country Skiing
- Glacier Walking (across the Grand Motte and Pissaillas glaciers)
- Ice Caves (at an altitude of 3000m in the Grand Motte glacier with outstanding ice sculptures within)
- Ice Climbing/Diving/Driving/Karting

 

Number 5:
La Plagne one of the biggest ski areas in the world and part of the Paradise ski domain with a large choice of facilities.
La Plagne is situated in the Savoie department among the French Alps, close to the Swiss and Italian borders. It is a great ski resort for family ski holidays or for a mixed ability group skiers. It consists of 6 high altitude resorts. During the summer there is a possibility of skiing on the glacier Bellecote.
Chambery and Geneva are the nearest airports and can be reached within 90 and 130mins respectively. From London, there is also a direct (night) service by Eurostar which takes around 10 hours.

 

Number 6:
Val d'Isere was historically a small mountain village in the Savoie department. Although primarily a winter resort, there is of course skiing and snowboarding with over 435 miles of ski and snowboard runs. It hosted the World skiing Championships in 2009.
Organised events include:
- La Scara (April), an alpine ski race for the kids!
- White Battle (March), a freestyle ski and snowboard competition
- Musicaval: Classical Music Festival which draws scores of visitors every year.

 

Number 7:
Morzine is the best base from which to explore the enormous Portes du Soleil region. As part of this ski domain, Morzine is linked to different ski resorts including Abondance, Avoriaz, La Chapelle d'Abondance, Châtel, Champéry, Les Gets, Montriond… Whether you are a first timer or a seasoned visitor, it offers the largest ski domain in Europe, with slopes covering over 400 miles across France and Switzerland and state-of-the-art facilities including a modern ski lift system that connects Morzine/Avoriaz to the others. It will also delight snowboarders as 9 snow parks are part of the domain.

 

Number 8:
As a part of the Portes du Soleil it has access to 650 individual slopes served by 209 ski lifts. With an average of 8 metres of snow every winter it's the snowiest resort in France. The nearest international airport is in Geneva about 80mins drive and Chambery airport can be reached in about 100mins. Cars are forbidden in the village, so outside the resort there are 2 huge car parks.
Once in the resort, there is a possibility to hire horse drawn sleighs or tracked vans to transport luggage to accommodation.
Avoriaz is the snowboard capital of Europe, and also offers children a choice of excellent ski schools.Non-skiers can try sleigh rides, husky sledding, snow-scooter, Nordic walking or helicopter tours.

 

Number 9:

Chamonix considered to be the most spectacular and scenic ski area in the world. It has an "all-year-round" season with over 435 miles of pistes and of course, the Mont Blanc, Europe's highest mountain is a constant backdrop. It is also a great place for the non-skier with exhibitions and an ex-Olympic sports centre with indoor and outdoor pools. Chamonix is situated in the Haute Savoie region. Geneva and Chambery are the nearest airports and can be reached within 90 mins.
During the summer you can visit Aiguille du Midi, Mer des Glace, and moutain bike around the Mont Blanc. Chamonix hosts a lot of celebrities from round the world.

 

Number 10:
Les Trois Vallées been the largest ski area in the world since 1973, with more than 410 miles of ski slopes and 183 ski lifts capable of transporting 260,000 skiers every hour. It is above the town of Moûtiers, and is actually made up of not three, but four valleys – Saint-Bon, Allues, Belleville, and Maurienne. Because 85% of its pistes are above 2000 metres, Les Trois Vallées enjoys excellent snow from the beginning of December right up until the end of April.

 

Four main resorts:
- Courchevel is well-known for being the ski resort of choice for the international jetset, a reputation which it well deserves
- Meribel is an enduring British favourite – La Chaudanne, the centre of Old Meribel was founded by Brits, and the resort retains a British flavour. English is virtually universally spoken, and there is an excellent English-speaking ski school- Les Menuires and Val Thorens are preferred by advanced skiers, beginners and intermediates are still well catered for however. Gentle green runs will soon get you up to speed and bring you the confidence to start with some of the easier blues.
