The Latest Scooter Craze: Safety and Injury Information

An Increase In South Florida Scooter Accidents

At Bechert and Associates we have seen an increase of Florida scooter accidents in the past year. Moped riders and children alike are injured on self propelled scooters. We are concerned to note this stark increase in accidents and injuries.

We believe there are several reasons why there has been an increase in the accident rate. One important reason for the increase is operator error. People need to take time to read the book that comes with their scooter. Reading the manual will give them an overview of scooter operation, the features and controls accessible by the driver, and safe riding strategies. If more people read the maunal then scooter accidents will decrease.

Some riders have issues because they don't obey roadway and scooter laws. Be sure follow the rules of the road while riding. Check with your local DMV for any state laws pertaining to scooter usage before you start riding. If you know these laws you will have a safer ride.

Using protective gear is something to many people neglect. Protective gear can save yoru life. At the very least you will suffer fewer serious injuries. Be sure to always wear a helmet and other protective gear when riding.

An unfortunate occurance is more than one rider on a scooter. We know that more than one rider per scooter has caused accidents. Please always ride one to as scooter as this is how they were designed to be used. Unfortunately the chance of injury goes up when two people are on the scooter.

Safety Reccommendations

We reccommend three things to increase your protection level while using a scooter. These are wearing proper safety equipment, knowing where you are riding, and being aware of your surroundings.

Protective Gear:

Protective gear is the most important thing that could save you in a scooter accident. A helmet and pads can keep you from suffering serious bodily injury in many accidents. Choose a helmet and gear that fits well and feels comfortable while still allowing the necessary range of motion.

Knowing The Area You Ride:

Knowing the area you ride is also important. Potholes, bumps, and other road debris cause many scooter accidents. Knowing the roads you will ride, and being ready for their hazards will lead to a safer ride.

Being Aware of Your Surroundings:

Being aware of your surroundings is crucial. You need to watch out for objects in the road, road debris, and the people driving around you. Make sure you wear visible colors, pay attention to drivers in front of and behind you at all times, and signal properly. Notice if drivers drive in a way that you don't trust and be defensive! Move away from them so you don't have an accident.
