Anxiety Vs Breathing Pattern
Anxiety is our body-mind response to certain conditions such as future uncertainties, upcoming threats and dangers. But anxiety is not always negative if we can understand and handle it properly.
The society has considered anxiety as a negative body response, and tried to overcome it in many ways. Simply force someone to relax in his state of nervousness will only lead to a worse situation with more tensions. A repressed anxiety will certainly cause panic attacks. If this situation keeps going, it will produce a vicious circle of anxiety – anxiety brings fear and fear creates more anxiety. Although so, we still need anxiety. In some emergency situations, anxiety can actually protect us or even save us! But when the anxiety keeps occurring and becomes a regular habit, then something is wrong.
When something is wrong with our body, actions should be taken to fix it. Our action means our physiology. It is our physiology that forms our habit patterns. Human being is built on body and mind. The food we eat will affect our mind, and our opinions will affect our body in taking actions. As well as food, breathing also affects body and mind. By changing our breathing, we've changed our habit patterns of anxiety.
Our breathing is different depends on the situation we are in. We take breaths differently when we are angry, shy, nervous, injured, or feeling sexual. And when we are in anxiety, we take breaths very shallow or having short breaths. Now, if we change our breathing pattern, many things will automatically change with it. Both breathing and anxiety are human habits. We all have particular breathing patterns which we have never noticed before. This particular breathing pattern has become a habit and everybody tends to keep doing it. In order to stop this habit, we need to do some inhalation practices. They are very good in reducing and curing the anxiety. By practicing the new inhalation pattern, the vicious circle of anxiety will be broken.
Anxiety is not a genetic disorder. Children have no anxiety. We have learned things through our upbringing, social interactions, educations, etc. and they have molded up our habits. So let's try to break this habit pattern. Yet it is very easy to do. If in anxiety we breathe very shallow, then try to breathe in contrary way, take a deep breath instead! Like NIKE says ‘Just do it!', then DO it!
