I believe one of the most effective ways to cut down your fuel consumption is to maintain a constant speed whenever possible, while keeping variations to a minimum and always in a smooth tone.
The ideal trip would be going from A to B at a constant speed without any hills or inclinations. You know by now that accelerating and even breaking will reduce fuel economy; if you’re moving at constant speed, you aren’t doing any of those.
Driving at a moderate steady speed by itself can give you a enormous boost on fuel economy. I also SERIOUSLY believe that a fuel efficient driver can get better fuel economy while travelling at a higher average speed than an inefficient driver.
Accelerating hard doesn’t help fuel economy and braking means you’re losing speed and you’ll have to accelerate again to recover it. Through anticipation you can avoid braking in many situations by releasing the pedal a bit earlier. The best way to minimize those variations is to keep a steady speed.
Imagine you’re on a highway and almost all drivers are driving at 120 km/h (75 mph); if you’re trying to travel at 160 km/h (100 mph) you’ll be using the brakes much more frequently than if you were driving at their speed. This will be especially true when traffic increases.
That will require a strong speed reduction and, you’ll have to do the opposite after you have no obstacle – accelerate and recover the speed you, opening the taps and having your engine burn as much fuel as it can. Don’t get me wrong - sometimes it feels really good to do it but I suggest you optimize you’re driving the rest of the time.
You know that acceleration is one of the worse things you can do regarding fuel economy; and if you’re accelerating back to 160 km/h (100 mph), which is far from slow, stronger air resistance will also cost you more fuel.
At night it might be easier to travel at constant high speeds and it will make a difference in the time you take to reach your destiny, although it still won’t be the most economical choice. But during the day with all the traffic, in a one-hour journey you might get to your destiny by about 5 minutes earlier at the expense of (maybe) a significant increase in fuel consumption if you keep a aggressive driving style.
You’re better off keeping a moderate speed and a more than reasonable safety distance. Your trip will be more relaxed and there will be important fuel savings.
I would suggest that you drive between 80-120 km/h (50-75mph) outside city limits or even 90-100 km/h (56-62 mph) for even higher efficiency.
