Characteristics and Uses of Mobility Scooters
Not all people with physical disabilities are capable of using a manual wheelchair. They do not have the proper stamina and strength to operate an ordinary wheelchair. To cope with this problem, technology introduces the mobility scooter, which also refers to as electric scooter, or power operated scooter.
This scooter is a mobility aid that functions the same as wheelchair. The only difference between the two is the design. A mobility scooter is more likely looks like a regular motor scooter.
Mobility scooters are powered by a rechargeable battery and consist of a seat that can be swiveled to become accessible when the handlebars block the front. A flat area for feet is also included to it where you can rest and relaxed your two feet.
The scooter has a tiller that is responsible for controlling the speed. To easily maneuver the direction, the electric scooter uses a switch, thumb paddles or finger controls.
There are a variety of models that can be seen in the marketplace. In general, there are two classifications for electric scooter:
1. The first one is the Rear-wheel drive (RD) which is multipurpose in nature because it can be used both for internal and external places. Usually, mobility scooters have a load capacity of 300-500 pounds.
2. The second type is the Front-wheel drive (FD), which is smaller than RD. It is ideal for indoor use and has a maximum weight capacity of 250 pounds.
Some of the advantages of electric scooter from manually operated wheelchairs are convenience and ease of use. Patients do not need to exert too much strength and effort in controlling the scooter. It is cost effective than buying electric wheelchairs.
There is still another option available if you cannot afford to buy new electric scooters. Some amusement parks offer scooter rentals so that disabled people can take pleasure during their stay at the park.
Mobility scooter is a great help for everyone facing mobility problems. Disability scooter is a way to improve their life. Using this type of disability machine can deliver freedom and enjoyment for each handicapped individual who uses a scooter.
