What Should You Know About Overactive Bladder?

Overactive bladder can cause a lot of frustration, difficulty and embarrassment. It is actually a problem in the bladder that, before it's full, causes to contract which results in a desire to instant urination and, consequently, it can cause involuntary urination. However, the good thing is that this problem has a cure and with correct approach, overactive bladder can easily be treated as well as cured.

What are its Causes?

This is how the entire system works: Kidneys send urine to the bladder and, as a result, it expands like a balloon to ensure that it can hold it. Once one-third of it has been filled, the brain receives a signal from it that it is going to be full soon. Thus, you start feeling that you will have to urinate soon. As it's further filled up, your urge to urinate increases as well. At the time of urination, your bladder muscles actually contract and cause the urine to come out.

When a person suffers from overactive bladder, these muscles actually involuntarily contract even when the bladder doesn't have enough urine in it. This results in an immediate desire to urinate. One important point to note here is that it may even be completely sensory. The desire will then have the person run to the bathroom and it may even result in accidents (something not so uncommon).

Here are some of the factors that can cause overactive bladder:

• Excessive drinking of fluids
• Excessive drinking of caffeine or alcohol
• Some medications can even cause the bladder to become exceedingly sensitive
• Bladder abnormalities, e.g. bladder stones, etc.
• Enlarged prostate - Problem with men over 40
• Infections in the Urinary zone
• Neurological disorders

What are the Treatments of Overactive Bladder?

If a person is suffering from this problem then a physician will most likely follow these steps from treatment:

Behavioral or Natural Therapy:

When you face urinary incontinence or overactive bladder, this is how it should be, ideally, treated:

Less Fluid Intake - Some beverages, like coffee and tea can be the cause of urinary incontinence. Hence, as your first option, it will be ideal to minimize the intake.

Double Voiding - After emptying the bladder in the bathroom, it's better to wait for a few minutes and try again to ensure that it's completely empty this time.

Exercise - Pelvic floor exercises, called kegels, can help you strengthen your weak muscles. They can help you have control within 2-3 months, depending on the seriousness of condition.

Other Methods – Medication and Surgery should be your last options. First, try to use all the natural methods that can help you.
