Mobility Scooters on Vacation
The want or need to go on vacation does not stop when you hit a predetermined age. I am not going to get to 65 and say 'right that's it, I'm staying home from now not!'. Like wise will I stay home just because my hip replacement is slowing me down. I plan on keeping the travel plan ideas constantly churning around in my mind.
The mobility scooter was designed to improve quality of life for the user. That means vacations too. There are a few things to keep in mind when planning the next trip if a mobility scooter is going to be required.
1. How will you be travelling to your vacation destination?
The small 3 wheel scooters are easily disassembled and packed into the vehicles luggage space, meaning you can go anywhere provided you also have room for some suitcases! The use of a trailer to tow the scooter may be an option if space is at a premium inside the car. If you own a more robust 4 wheel scooter model that is not only heavy but difficult to disassemble, than the trailer option is best. If your vacation involves air, train or bus travel then hiring a scooter at your destination could well be the most cost effective option for short time frames. Do the maths on hiring verse the cost of transportation before deciding to hire.
2. Battery charges need to be considered. One charge before leaving home is most likely not going to get you through the holiday!
3. Vacationers need to carefully ascertain the type of accommodation offered at their destination. Visits to family and friends simply requires a call or email and then asking the right questions. When using commercial lodging options a smart move is to directly contact the proprietors of the accommodation and ask your specific questions regarding scooter accessibility, configurations of rooms etc. Travel agents or by personally looking at pictures on the web are not going to answer all your mobility concerns and questions. Please, please, please don't 'roll the dice' and hope that lodging options will suit you and the scooter.
4. Investigate the likely vacation activities you and your group will experience while away. Making use of tourist information websites will also assist in determining the areas suitability for visitors with mobility issues.
