Lambretta scooters were originally produced by the Innocenti Corporation in Italy prior to the outset of World War II. Engineers from Innocenti based the design of the Lambretta on the Cushman scooters which were designed in Nebraska and used by the American military for transportation of field troops and paratroopers.
Fernando Innocenti's original goal in the design of the Lambretta was to make it economical and easy to use for both genders, and allow for an extra passenger to come along for the ride. During World War II, the original Innocenti factory in Italy was abandoned and the brand resurfaced in India following the war.
Post-war India was encountering many of the same types of transportation issues which Italy faced during the time. These included poor transportation infrastructure, lack of preparation for the increased demand for small cars and a limited demand for private transportation.
The peak of popularity for the Lambretta scooter came with the early 1960s Mod movement in Italy and Great Britain. These scooters quickly became the most noticeable icon of Mod culture, appearing in advertisements, movies and magazines around the world. One of the most recognizable appearances of Lambrettas would have to be as Mike Myers' scooter of choice in the Austin Powers series. Eventually with the increase of expendable income in the middle classes in Europe and abroad, manufacture of the Lambretta slowed throughout the 1970s and 80s, eventually coming to a halt in 1988.
Currently, the Lambretta brand and all brand rights associated with it are property of Fiat, and Lambretta still enjoys popularity around the world. Clubs across the UK and Europe often hold rallies, meetings and races which attract like-minded Lambretta enthusiasts. Customization is a large part of the culture and attracts many current "Mods" and collectors looking for mementos of the time period. Customization is a costly proposal, however, so these individuals often have a surplus of time and funding to make their Lambretta unique.
Restoration services for previously owned and used Lambrettas are also in high demand, and shops offering these services do very consistent business. Collectors are always seeking a vintage Lambretta to add to their collection.
If you're looking for a vintage scooter to make your own, find yourself a Lambretta!
