For a long time I had always wanted to go to Tibet. But it's one of those places you hear so much about and it seems there is so much red tape in getting there, it's all too hard! It does not have to be like that, for me when I got around to it, it was a simple matter of booking an overland tour from Kathmandu! It was all too easy and what followed for one of the best 14 day overland journeys I have ever had.

The tour departed from Kathmandu in the early hours of a winter morning. As the sun rose we where well out of the city and into the countryside of Nepal and heading for the border. Miles and miles of terraced hillsides, green valleys and isolated villages spread before us and in the distance our first tantalizing views of the snow capped Himalaya, a range we would have to cross to get to Lhasa.

Leaving Nepal and crossing into Tibet over the Friendship Bridge was a smooth process (the travel company had arranged our visas and travel passes). We left behind our Nepalese guide and bus and transferred into a four-wheel drive with a Tibetan driver. The raging Bhote Koshie River churned below us as we climbed up the narrow dirt road towards the heights of the Tibetan Plateau.

In the days that followed, we climbed higher and higher, the weather got colder and we truly entered the remoteness of southern Tibet. Our 4WD stopped along the way in remote villages, abandoned monasteries and at small lakes and rivers. At times we were surrounded by endless expanses of icy tundra, with the snow capped mountains an ever present guardian on the horizon. It was like being in a different world, the landscapes breathtaking, a truly out of this world experience.

Of course as with all travel there are the hardships...the cold, the altitude, the wind, a spot of food poisoning and the long hours of driving. You have to be prepared, bring plenty of warm clothes, drink lots of water and take things easy to allow your body to acclimatize. Travel with some good friends or learn a bit of the local language to help ease the boredom of hours in a car. It also helps to be traveling with a good tour company who don't try and cover too much distance in one day and allow you plenty of time to take in the amazing landscape, stop when you want to take photos, talk to locals and get a feel for the real Tibet, not the Chinese impression most travel companies want to give you.

Along route the towns and monasteries like Gyantse, Shigatse, Larjung and Lao Tingri are amazing, they are true hubs of Tibetan and Buddhist culture. Most towns have a Monastery and fort which still remain as magnificent testaments of architecture. Make sure you take time out and venture inside a monastery, visit the prayer halls and listen to the monks chanting, see the kitchens where massive vats of butter tea and tsampa (ground barley) are prepared for the monks and wander around the places to see impressive Thangka paintings, burning butter lamps and gold plated statues.

Before Lhasa we passed the impressive Yam Druk Tso (Lake) its emerald waters glistening under the ever blue sky. From the heights of a 5500 meter road pass we looked down one way to the lake and the other to the valley that hosts Lhasa. Here is also a good place to ride a yak, but way too cold for a toilet break so make sure you pee at lower altitude, otherwise you'll be snapping icicles off!!

Most tours end in Lhasa, and that itself is an impressive city. The Potala Palace, Jhokart and Bharkor Square are all must sees, if you have time venture further afield to Gandan and Sera Monasteries (not normally included in most tours). The tour ended with a trans-Himalayan flight back from Lhasa to Kathmandu, grab a window seat for this Himalayan feast for your eyes as the you fly over the snow capped mountains!

Since returning from Tibet I have heard many varying stories about people being ripped off and having bad tours! When looking for your tour, be careful, ask your operator if they run the tour themselves of subcontract it out to a Chinese operator (most do) get references and shop around. Try and book with an agent that uses Tibetan Guides, Hotels, Transport companies and restaurants, that way you will get a better feel for Tibetan culture and Buddhism.
