Peter Matthiessen and Paul Theroux have a commonality close to my own restless heart. Moving about the earth by any means available, especially on their own two feet, they are travel writers, novelists and explorers of themselves and the world around them. Though different in age and temperament, both writers possess the necessary prerequisite for the ultimate explorer-courage. Both writers have the uncanny knack of involving the reader to the extent he or she transcends the genre. The joy lies in experiencing the journey to the fullest regardless of whether it is a novel or non-fiction. Often hard to tell the difference, I was happy to go along for the ride on both adventures. Here is the first.

The Snow Leopard

When Peter Matthiessen, by then a Zen Buddhist, wrote "The Snow Leopard" he was still mourning the untimely death of his wife. Accompanied by wildlife biologist George Schaller, Matthiessen's is a true account of his five-week soul-searching quest beneath the massif Annapurna, to meet with the secluded, highly revered Lama of Shey in the remote crags of the Himalayas known as the "Land of Dolpo."

Squirreled into Matthiessen's esoteric backpack are the usual Himalayan suspects-flapping prayer flags, loyal Sherpas, untrustworthy porters, murderous bandits and the ever-present yak with its yak butter and yak tea with yak hair in it. It's October. Despite the inherent danger of a fast approaching Tibetan winter, both men are driven to find the evasive blue sheep of slate blue color and gold demonic eyes, and hopefully catch a glimpse of one of the most solitary animals on earth, the Snow Leopard. Every step of Matthiessen's resolute outer journey is haunted by the loss of his wife and longtime Buddhist companion. Trekking west and north along the Nepalese/Tibetan frontier beneath the humbling shadows of Annapurna's snowy peaks, the writer is compelled to question his deepest feelings about life and death.

Mr. Matthiessen's mysticism does not overshadow this very physical journey of discovery. To the contrary, his and George Schaller's detailed observations of Himalayan flora and fauna seen nowhere else in the world, are breathtaking and inspiring. Matthiessen provides the reader with an awesome lens, micro-focusing on the tiniest creature, expanding to reveal the magnitude of the whole. Suffering altitude illness, slogging through muddy gorges and swollen rivers, sleeping in cold leaky tents and fighting off mosquitoes and rabid dogs plague the author and his companion. Abandoned by porters, robbed by thieves, they are never deterred from the goal: finding the blue sheep and the cunning leopard. One will bring delight, the other disappointment. Matthiessen's friendship with and expectations for the Sherpa Tukten reminds the reader of the transitory nature of everything on earth.

But for Matthiessen and a few writers like him, the snowy land of spinning prayer wheels and strange naked mountain men impervious to cold would be nothing but fantasy. An avid researcher, Matthiessen gives us a glimpse into the beauty and mystery of an innocent people in a unique land, tragically lost in time, trampled into the Godless fabric of the Peoples Republic of China.

Peter Matthiessen's oceanographic "Blue Meridian" was the basis for the motion picture "Blue Water, White Death." Set deep in the Brazilian rain forest, his "At Play in the Fields of the Lord" was also made into a motion picture.
